This week doesn’t see any big Hollywood releases. For me the most interesting release is Chef starring and directed by Jon Favreau. He plays a chef called Carl Casper who loses his job following an altercation with a food critic that goes viral on the Internet. With the help of his ex-wife he seeks to rekindle his love for food by going on a cross country tour with an old food truck. The film features appearances from Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downy Jnr so I suspect there’ll be fun and frolics along the way while reviving career and family.
Mrs Brown makes the move from TV to the big screen with the release of Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie. Don’t plan to go see this one but if it floats your boat the story focuses on Mrs Brown’s attempts to save her market stall after it comes under threat from a “ruthless” developer.
The 80’s jukebox movie Walking on Sunshine is also released. Based on the trailer I’m guessing girl meets boy, boy is going to marry a close friend, misadventures ensue, it all works out in the end. This film is going to live and die by its ability to repeat the trick of Mamma Mia in having just enough cheese to bring the fun but not so much to bring the stink. My wife tells me I’m going to see this one.
Finally, there is Cold in July that brings together the acting talents of Michael C. Hall, Sam Shephard, and Don Johnson. I don’t know too much about the film beyond it involves a protective father and an ex-con and there is going to be a confrontation.
