north america weekend box office 18th – 20th July

Well it’s good news at the top of the North American box office after last weekend.  My favourite movie of the year so far was number one for a second weekend.  Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes grossed $36m taking total takings to $139m.

The next three spots were all taken by new releases and in the battle of The Purge: Anarchy, Planes (2) and Sex Tape it was The Purge that came out on top with $29m ahead of Planes (2) with $17m and Sex Tape in a disappointing fourth place with just $14.6m over the weekend.  This is not good news for the Jason Segal and Cameron Diaz vehicle that I suspect Sony expected to do much better.

Transformers: Age of Exstinksion slipped down to fifth place with a weekend gross of $9.8m.  Maleficent continues to show the legs that popular family movies demonstrate each year and hangs on to tenth place despite having been on release for eight weeks with a total gross of $228m in North America.  Its worldwide takings currently stand at $700m.
