The Scarlett Johansson vehicle Lucy, directed by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) topped the North American box office over the week with an opening of $44m. While not earth shattering, for a movie with a reported production budget of $40m Universal and Canal+ will be very happy. It’s well on its way to delivering a profit.
The movie beat off competition from Hercules starring the muscle bound hero Dwayne Johnson which managed a more modest opening weekend of $29m. This will be more of a concern for Paramount as the movie had a reported production budget of $100m. Hard to believe given the TV special feel it had. I guess it’s not how much you have, it’s how you use it.
Our Apes on horses friends found themselves rounding out the top three places with a $16.4m weekend, or $172m after three weeks of release. The movie has taken $354m world wide to date. Hopefully it will continue to draw the crowds as it deserves to deliver a big profit and encourage similar projects to be developed.
I made a prediction that Maleficent would over take X-Men: Days Of Future Past because family movies have more legs in the cinema and for once I was right. Its total gross at the North American box office have reached $232m versus $231m for its mutant rivals.
