North American Weekend Box Office – August 1st to 3rd

I expected it to do well but blimey Guardians Of The Galaxy has destroyed the planet were Ronan failed.  Weekend estimates available from Box Office Mojo indicate that Marvel’s latest project grossed $94m.  It opened in over 4,000 theatres and did well with Imax and 3D sales.  Having seen the movie the word of mouth will be very positive, time will tell just how much money it will rake in.

Lucy was pushed down into second place and managed $18.2m.  In third was a new release, Get On Up, the James Brown biopic which managed a respectable $14m given it was released in circa half the number of theatres as Guardians.

The other story to keep watching is Boyhood which saw takings increase 43% ($2.5m) on the previous weekend reversing normal box office logic.  Not bad given it was only available in 311 theatres.
