It was a very quiet weekend at the North American box office. To put it into some perspective, despite being out in cinemas for five weeks Guardians of The Galaxy was number one with an estimate weekend gross of $17m. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was another non-mover at number two with takings of $11.9m.
In more shock news If I Stay was another non-mover at three with a weekend gross of $9.3m. While not being a runaway success the film has taken $36m worldwide against a production budget of just $11m. MGM and New Line will be perfectly happy with those figures.
The highest new entry was As Above/So Below the new horror film based on Paris which managed $8.6m. That’s a pretty weak opening but it performed better than the new Pierce Brosnan vehicle November Man. The film debuted with weekend takings of $7.8m. November Man had a reported budget of $15m so it’s not a complete loss and it still has to be released internationally so may ultimately do OK.
