Good Afternoon Everyone,
I’ve been away for a week sunning myself in Oxfordshire and had a great time but sadly all good things come to an end and I drove home this morning. I’ve been to Oxford, seen Blenheim Palace and actually read a book. It’s been a largely film free week with two exceptions – I rewatched The Dark Crystal (1982) and saw a stage version of Shakespeare in Love (1998).
I watched The Dark Crystal because I am trying to compile my top 10 favourite films of all time and I have a lot of fond memories of this film. Truth be told it’s not as good as I remember but it is amongst the best work of Jim Henson and the ambition of the puppet work is fantastic. The best way to think of it is The Lord of The Rings for kids.
As for Shakespeare in Love it was just as I feared – it’s a money grab using a well loved film title. The story is effectively the same as the film but it has been given the ‘Globe’ treatment. What I mean by this is that they have ditched the music from the film and replaced it with period instruments and a bit of a song and dance at the end. The biggest problem is that the film is perfect and anything else is going to pale by comparison. It’s OK but it’s just not as funny.
Anyway, there’s a bunch of films to catch up with so I need to make some decisions on do I try and watch everything? There’s five films I am interested in and I am thinking about seeing two tomorrow. I’m open to suggestions.
