New UK Cinema Releases – Commencing 8th January

There are three mainstream releases this weekend in the UK worthy of note.  The first of these films is Taken 3 starring the evergreen action hero Liam Neeson.  In the latest edition in this franchise Bryan Mills (Neeson) goes on the run after being accused of a murder he didn’t commit while trying to find the man that did it.  Anyone remember the rather excellent The Fugitive (1993)?

Next up is another musical from Disney, this time called Into the Woods.  It has a varied cast that includes Meryl Streep, Chris Pine and James Corden to name but three.  According to IMDB a witch tasks a baker and his wife with collecting magical items from classic fairy tales in order to remove a curse placed on the family tree.  Just when you thought it wasn’t possible to find another way to shoe horn a giant beanstalk into a movie!

To end this week’s selection we have a more grown up feature that is expected to get a few mentions at the Oscars.  Foxcatcher stars Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo in a retelling of real life events surrounding the lead up to the 1988 Seoul Olympics.  Two brothers join a new wrestling team established by eccentric millionaire, John E Du Point.  I believe a murder is involved but it should be an interesting watch – if it is being shown near me of course.
