Depending on where you live in the UK and the quality of your local cinema there are a number of interesting releases. The one to watch is Whiplash starring Miles Teller and the now Oscar nominated J.K. Simmons who takes over the film. I accept that the premise of a film based on the relationship between a jazz band leader and an up and coming drummer doesn’t set the world alight but trust me – this film is special.
There are two other Oscar nominated films out this week in the UK. The one I’m interested in is American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper. The outline of the story suggests it’s going to be a mix of tense war time action and the affects on war on the soldier. The other film in question is Wild starring Reese Witherspoon. From what I’ve picked up from the trailer Witherspoon’s character uses a long distance trail to escape from her life. Expect a lot of introspection and beautiful scenery.
There’s a home grown release in cinemas this week that makes me a little nervous. Testament of Youth is a World War One drama about a young woman who has to grow up quickly as war hits home and her boyfriend volunteers for the front. My concern is that it might be a little melodramatic and sunday Afternoon TV.
What are you looking forward to? Let me know.
