UK Cinema New Releases – Weekend Commencing 20th February

Normally I do the UK weekend box office results on a Wednesday night but the numbers are late this week so I’ve turned my attention to new cinema releases.  There are four releases of note this weekend. In no particular order I will begin with Project Almanac, a found footage style teenage adventure story involving the discovery of an object that allows time travel.  The trailer suggests it’s going to be all good fun in the beginning before things go wrong.  What we don’t know is how the situation will resolve itself.

Also out this weekend is the new Michael Mann film Blackhat that stars Chris Hemsworth as a jailed computer hacker called upon by the authorities to help track down an uber cybercriminal.  The only thing I know is that it has bombed spectacularly having only taken $16.6m to date worldwide against a reported production budget of $70m.  I wonder if I’ll continue my current contrarian trend and give it 4/5?

If comedy is your thing then the UK is getting The Wedding Ringer starring Kevin Hart and Josh Gad.  Hart plays a character who hires himself out as a best man for grooms lacking a posse.  Did quite well in North America so we’ll have to wait and see if it repeats that success on this side of the pond.

If small scale personal drama is more your bag than this weekend sees Jennifer Aniston starring in Cake as someone suffering from chronic pain syndrome who becomes entangled with the family of a former member of her support group.  I’m not expecting too many laughs but there has been a lot of praise for Aniston’s performance.

What are you looking forward to?  Let me know in the comments section below.
