UK Cinema New Releases – Weekend Commencing 27th February

I have identified four releases to blog about that are opening in the UK this weekend.  In no particular order I’ll begin with comedy sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.  The original film was a surprise hit having brought in the ‘grey pound’ into the cinemas in droves.  It looks like the same cast and the same jokes being recycled in a slightly different hotel.  There is one new ingredient in the form of Richard Gere.  Let’s see if it’s enough to make it interesting.

Jennifer Lopez returns to the big screen with The Boy Next Door.  It’s not a film I’m looking forward to.  It looks like a variation of the creepy stranger next door this time with a pretty-boy teenager.  Not sure if he can act but hey he’s probably got great abs.  I know, I know, I shouldn’t take expectations into a film but I’ve seen the trailer and it is what it is.

The biggest release is Focus starring the one-time megastar Will Smith.  He’s still got the charisma but he’s had a rough run in the last few years.  In this film he’s a con artist (criminal) who we’ll be expected to root for because he’ll be taking on an even bigger criminal.  It has a dubious moral premise but I have to admit I liked the Ocean’s franchise which was the same kind of thing.

The final entrant is not going to be as wide a release as the others but I have to mention it as it was a big smash at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014.  It Follows is a low budget horror film that has had rave reviews from pretty much everybody (except me, the synthesized score drove me mad).  The premise of the film is that an evil demon/presence is passed between teenagers through sex.  The demon is an unrelenting, apparently undestructable, force that doesn’t give up chasing whoever is ‘it’.  I wasn’t scared by it but horror fans are saying it’s given them nightmares.

Those are my choices but what are you looking forward to?  Let me know in the comments section below.
