Fingers crossed and here we go. Another weekend that could equally excite and disappoint as I try and decide what films I’m going to spend my money on. The most widely publicised film coming out this weekend (to give it its official title) is The Divergent Series: Insurgent. Erm, smells like the marketing people have been all over this one. Anyway the film picks up after the first film in the Divergent series, or whatever that is now called, with Tris and Four on the run from the Erudite faction who staged their attempted coup last time around. Given the title I’m guessing it’s time to begin the fightback and gain new allies while providing ample opportunity for Theo James to remove his shirt.
The next big hitter I am forecasting is the new animation from Dreamworks called Home. It had a very strong preview weekend so I’m expecting it to rack up a strong total when I review the weekend box office next week. The film features an alien called Oh (Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory) who arrives on Earth and befriends a young girl while being on the run from his own kind.
If action’s your thing then you have two options. Jason Statham is kicking ass and taking names while dealing with a gambling problem in Las Vegas. The film revels in the wildly imaginative title Wild Card. For some reason it reminds me of The Gambler starring Mark Wahlberg although I suspect this will have a lot more action. Alternatively there is The Gunman starring Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba. It boasts the better cast but feels formulaic – mission goes wrong, upsets a spy agency of some kind, not sure. I also need to make it clear on behalf of Mr Penn that this film in no way signifies his intention to copy the Liam Neeson model of becoming an action hero in his sixties.
I thought it worth mentioning that there is a new comedy horror film coming out called The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds. It’s looks really intriguing – Reynolds believes a cat and dog are talking to him and the cat appears to be convincing him to commit various murders. Sadly it has a very limited release so I probably won’t get to see it.
So what’s got your juices flowing – let me know in the comments below.
