I think it fair to say we’re leaving the low point of the year that is January and February. In the coming weeks we have Fast & Furious 7 and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Disney’s live action production of Cinderella opens in the UK this weekend after a monster debut in North America. If you don’t know the story shame on you and I certainly won’t be taking the time to explain it.
The other kid-friendly release this weak is The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water which appears to be drawing on the likes of The Smurfs (2011) by combining animation and live action. Anyway, the secret formula for Krabby Patty has been stolen and must be recovered.
There are two potential stink bombs out this weekend. My favourite to win the title is Get Hard starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. I’ve seen the trailer a few times in recent weeks and it looks horrific. Ferrell is a white collar criminal who is facing time in jail and for reasons currently unknown hires Hart to prepare him for life on the inside. Cue a series of inappropriate jokes about African American culture, gay people and pretty much any other topic you care to think about. There’s also Seventh Son whose biggest problem I suspect is they’ve scrimped on the special effects and will be spectacularly boring. Expect a young teenager to learn he has powers he didn’t know he had and a very dangerous quest he must embark upon. Sadly due to the limitations on my cinema vouchers this will be the film I am going to watch this weekend. Wish me luck.
I don’t have time for a box office blog this week but as I predicted the animation Home beat Insurgent to the top of he weekend UK box office. Wild Card barely scraped into the top ten while The Gunman struggle to a disappointing fifth.
