The Filmnomore Movie Blog watches the new vertigo inducing trailer for The Walk
First we had the documentary (Man on Wire (2008)) and now we have the film. The Walk is based on the true story of French maniac Philippe Petit who in 1974 decided he just had to stretch a steel wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre and walk across with nothing but a balance bar for company. It will be interesting to see how the movie differentiates itself from the documentary. It is clear from the tone of the film that it is going to try and capture the atmosphere of a heist film – the characters are constantly reiterating the illegality of what it is they are doing.
There are two things The Walk will have to do to succeed. The first is delivering tension. Will we be gripping our seats expecting the audacious plan to be uncovered by building security? The second thing this film has to deliver is making us care about the central character Philippe. I think it is going to try and do that through his relationship with his partner. The Walk needs to deliver otherwise we won’t care whether he lives or dies when he makes his attempt to cross between the buildings.
