We’re back in Philadelphia
The first trailer for the Rocky franchise spin-off Creed starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Johnson, son of legendary boxer Apollo Creed, who featured so heavily in the Rocky series has arrived. Jordan is teaming up for a second time with Ryan Coogler following on from their critical success with Fruitvale Station (2013). Adonis is a young boxer who looks like he’s had a decent upbringing albeit estranged from his father. He’s trying to fight his way up the ladder against fellow young men who are from the tougher neighbourhoods of Philadelphia and what-do-you-know a trainer don’t think he can hack it.
It looks like at the start of the movie he’s a loner who’s taught himself to fight but if he’s going to be a success I’m guessing he’s going to have to learn to trust others and take advice. Creed looks like it’s returning to the routes of the Rocky franchise with a grittier street-level feel. My concern is that there is evidence in the trailer to suggest Adonis is going suddenly find himself thrust into the spotlight against a world class boxer. From this point on Creed looks like it could be copycat of the first Rocky (1976) film with lots of nods and references including the stars and stripes shorts, Rocky Balboa in a familiar hat and Adonis in the iconic grey track suit. This worked for Jurassic World (2015) but from first reviews not so well for Terminator Genisys (2015). I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt given the talent involved.
